Candidate for the presidency
of the African Development Bank
Africa is at a decisive turning point in its history. Our continent must not only aim for development; it must aspire to a profound and lasting transformation. This bold ambition is at the heart of my candidacy for the presidency of the African Development Bank.
Economic projections forecast gross domestic product growth of 3.8% in 2024 and 4.2% in 2025. However, these figures mask a more complex reality. This growth, while promising, remains fragile and insufficient to eradicate the poverty that still afflicts millions of our fellow citizens. The African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals remind us of the urgent need for development that is both sustainable and inclusive.
But this transformation can only be achieved with the increased participation of Africans themselves. The private sector, civil society, governments and regional organizations must play a central role in this dynamic. Together, we must leverage our strengths, innovate and cooperate to build the Africa of tomorrow.
To build a prosperous future, we need to strengthen our essential infrastructures – roads, energy, ports – in partnership with international institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank, as well as bilateral players. But these efforts will not be enough if we neglect the social and educational sectors, as well as environmental protection. Proactive adaptation to climate change is crucial to ensuring truly virtuous and inclusive growth. Industrializing and encouraging the local processing of our raw materials are strategic priorities for increasing added value and diversifying our economies. Regional integration and intra-regional trade must be strengthened to facilitate trade and reduce endemic unemployment. It’s also time to change the narrative around our continent. Africa is a land of opportunity, and must become a place where people want to come, live and invest. We need to create a favorable environment to attract foreign talent and investment, showing that Africa is ready to take on the challenges of the 21st century.
Our greatest wealth lies in our human capital, and more particularly in our youth. Africa’s dynamic, innovative youth are the driving force behind our future. Investing in education, vocational training and job creation for our young people is an absolute priority. They are the architects of our continent’s transformation, and their potential must be fully realized. Throughout my career, I have devoted my energy and expertise to serving Africa. As head of the Bank of Central African States, I orchestrated the reforms needed to fortify our financial system in the face of multiple crises. As head of the African Development Bank, I am committed to continuing and amplifying the efforts undertaken in recent years, guaranteeing the continuity that is essential for our growth. Let’s make this transformation a reality. Let’s innovate together for Africa.
